Measuring for Window Coverings

Window-CoveringsYour measurements for window coverings will, of course, depend on what type you’re measuring for and whether they will be installed inside the window frame or outside of it. In addition to this, you will also need to consider the amount of fabric you will need if you are measuring for curtains or draperies.

For an interior or recessed installation, you will need to consider the inside measurements of the window frame. Venetian blinds will require a minimum casement or sill depth of 1 1/2″ to 2 1/2″ depending on the blinds used. This will ensure that the blinds are totally recessed in the frame.

For all your measurements, be sure to use a metal tape measure in order to ensure the accuracy of your measurements. Metal will not stretch or sag and skew your measurements. Always record your measurements in inches (do not use feet, yards, centimeters and so on). This will help keep your recorded measurements from being misinterpreted later on, either by you or someone creating your custom window coverings. Also, be sure to measure to the nearest 1/8″ for greatest accuracy.

When you measure and record the numbers, start by measuring the width of the window first, then measure the height, taking care not to transpose the numbers. You don’t want to waste time and money by having the blinds or curtains made or purchased incorrectly. If you are measuring several windows in the same wall, even if they appear to be all the same size be sure to measure each one individually. Construction errors do happen and small differences are common even in apparently similar windows.
