Cellular (or Honeycomb) shades are a newer form of blind constructed with hollow cells that help provide greater insulation against heat and cold. Most manufacturers offer them in a range of widths and heights. They are available in a variety of materials and colors and can be used for both opaque and semi-opaque applications and are ideal for skylight applications because of their rigidity. Cell sizes range from 1/2″ to 1 1/4″ depending on the efficiency of insulation desired. This type of blind can have either bottom-up or top-down track systems.

Sheers can look fabulous and offer a great decorative element. Sheers do filter and soften the sunlight, but they are not very effective in providing privacy and blocking out total sunlight. This type of window treatment would normally only be purchased for aesthetic reasons. Sheers can often be purchased pre-made or they may need to be custom made if they do not fit the window they are required for.

A newer product on the market is the privacy sheer. These are similar to vertical or horizontal blinds but with slats enclosed within a sheer fabric. This allows the vanes or slats to be rotated to block out light and ensure privacy, and in the open position the sheer fabric lets in diffused light similar to the more traditional sheers. Privacy sheers are especially effective for large windows and patio doors.
