Using Lamps for Lighting (2)

One thing to keep in mind is that most people do not use enough lighting while decorating. Using lamps in a space serves two functions:

  • adding more lighting and
  • adding another decorative element

For a small to mid-size room, consider using two to three floor and/or table lamps in addition to the light fixtures already present in the room. In a large room, consider using three to five floor and/or table lamps in addition to the light fixtures present.

You will have previously determined the lighting required for the room and whether it is best to bring in additional lighting through light fixtures or through lamps. If you have determined that you will need some additional floor and/or table lamps, you can now purchase the lamps selecting styles and colors that will work with the other pieces in the room.

However, besides appearance, you will need to take into consideration how much and what type of lighting is required for an area (whether it be general, task or accent lighting) and how much light and what type of light the particular lamp you are selecting gives off to determine if a selected lamp is a good fit for the area.

When purchasing lamps, most lamps will come with a shade; however, if the lamp base is sold separately, ensure that you purchase a properly scaled shade to the lamp base. In other words, don’t buy a shade that is too small (or too large) for the base.
